"Read Me" file Star Trek(tm): 25th Anniversary Enhanced CD-ROM =========================================================================== This file contains late-breaking information that you should know about. This file has the following entries in it. MEMORY RECOMMENDATIONS INSTALLATION AND SETUP PROBLEMS WITH NCACHE SOUND CARDS TROUBLESHOOTING INTERPLAY DEMOS =========================================================================== MEMORY RECOMMENDATIONS You need 560K free low memory and 1024K free EMS memory to play the game. If you can free up even more memory, the game will play faster. We recommend playing the game with 2048K (or more) free EMS memory. The game will also play faster if you can free up more low memory. Use the MEM command (with DOS 4.0 or higher) or the CHKDSK command (with versions of DOS before 4.0) to see how much free memory you have in your computer. Refer to your DOS manual for more information on freeing up low memory and EMS memory. =========================================================================== INSTALLATION AND SETUP To install the game for the first time, you need to run the INSTALL.EXE program on the CD-ROM. Make sure you have about 10MB of free space on your hard disk before you begin. Installation will take 2 or 3 minutes. If you are running EGA instead of VGA, run the program INSTEGA.EXE instead. If you change your sound card after you install the game for the first time, type the following commands from the DOS prompt before you play the game again. C: CD \TREKCD SETUP The SETUP program will customize the game for your sound card. You do NOT need to run the SETUP program if you have already run the INSTALL program and selected your sound card settings; the SETUP program is only necessary if you need to _change_ your sound card settings. =========================================================================== PROBLEMS WITH NCACHE You may experience game freezes or erratic mouse behavior if you use the disk cache program NCACHE or NCACHE2 with expanded memory. If you use one of these programs and you experience problems, try running the program with the flag NCACHE /ext or NCACHE2 /ext This may solve the problem. If you continue to experience problems, try to set up your memory configuration so you have 1500K free EMS memory before you begin. If you still experience problems, try disabling NCACHE before running the game. =========================================================================== SOUND CARDS If you have a sound card that is not listed in the INSTALL program: First try installing the game with the option "100% SOUND BLASTER COMPATIBLE". If this option does not work, try tweaking your BLASTER variable as listed below in the "Troubleshooting" section, below. If you just can't make it work, then install the game again, using the option "MOSTLY SOUND BLASTER COMPATIBLE". This has a greater chance of success on certain machines, but the sound quality will be lower with some pops and clicks in the speech. Technical explanation: All sound cards except "MOSTLY SOUND BLASTER COMPATIBLE" use a feature of most sound cards called "autoinitialize DMA". If you know that your computer system or sound card does not support this feature, you will have to use the "MOSTLY SOUND BLASTER COMPATIBLE" setting. =========================================================================== TROUBLESHOOTING Q: "I don't hear any speech." A: 1. Make sure you have speakers or headphones hooked up to your sound card, and that you have turned up the volume by using the volume controls on the back of the sound card, or by using a software volume control program. See your sound card manual for details. 2. Make sure you are not running a DOS shell from Windows or any other program that will shell to DOS. To ensure this, type the word EXIT at the C: prompt. If nothing happens, go on to step 3. 3. Make sure you selected the correct sound card settings when you ran the INSTALL program. If you need to change these settings, go into the TREKCD directory on your hard disk and type SETUP. (See "Installation and Setup," above.) 4. If you still don't hear any speech, there may be an error in the SET BLASTER variable in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Make sure that this statement correctly reflects the IRQ and DMA settings of your sound card. The installation program that came with your sound card probably correctly set up the SET BLASTER statement. Just in case the statement is wrong, try putting one (and only one) of these statements in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T3 SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T3 These two statements are typical of most sound cards. If you have altered your sound card settings, be sure to adjust the SET BLASTER statement accordingly. 5. If the settings are correct and you still don't hear any speech, try using the 100% SOUND BLASTER COMPATIBLE setting in the SETUP program. 6. If you still don't hear any speech, try using the MOSTLY SOUND BLASTER COMPATIBLE setting in the SETUP program. Q: "The background sounds seem to have a fragment of speech in them, or sometimes it sounds like the background sounds seem to hiccup." A: Check your CONFIG.SYS file and see if there is a /E somewhere after the line containing the text "MSCDEX". If there is a /E, then try removing the /E. This may solve sound problems on certain systems. Q: "It says I don't have enough memory." A: See page 5 of the manual for some ways to free up more memory for the game. Q: "The music is too loud." A: Each sound card comes with a software program that will adjust the volume of music and digitized sound that is played through the card. See your sound card manual for details on the volume control of your particular card. If you think the music is drowning out the sound of the voices, you should be able to use this volume control program to reduce the volume of the music while maintaining the volume of the speech. =========================================================================== INTERPLAY DEMOS This CD-ROM contains a number of demonstration versions of other Interplay games. To get to the demos, type DEMOS from the root directory of your CD-ROM.
